This Program is designed to produce young researchers capable of specialist research at the highest level who are also well-versed the broader context of sports science. Such an approach ensures that graduates are molded into leaders capable of providing solutions appropriate to the practical context of the sports field, having understood each issue and the surrounding circumstances based on a clear understanding and awareness of the sports sciences as a whole. The Program therefore anticipates that, in the future, its graduates will form the core of a functional human network in sports-related disciplines and fields.
In recent years, the realm of sport has been internationalized rapidly. The Program therefore needs to ensure that its graduates are equipped with the skills necessary to function in international environments. The Program will welcome students from Asia and Oceania, and dispatch students to overseas research centers, thus fostering cross-cultural communication skills and allowing researchers to develop international networks.
One of the difficulties in sports science research is the fact that, in many cases, a lack of practical experience of the research issue in question can make it difficult to fully comprehend the practical implications of that same issue. It is crucial, therefore, that persons with experience of competing at a professional level are integrated into the academic discipline. Systematic efforts will be made to seek out doctoral student applicants from amongst sportsmen and women, coaches, trainers and management staff active at an international level. Additionally, measures will be put in place to construct doctoral course programs suitable for mature students who have previously left higher education, such as those persons working on the front line of sport science-related areas.
The Graduate School for Sport Sciences, Waseda University, already offers a number of scholarship schemes and systems, such as guaranteeing the availability of scholarship funds equivalent to tuition fees for graduate students who are under 30 years of age. In addition, a new system of financial support for doctoral students, allowing them to be fully dedicated to their research, will be constructed.
